HISTORY

The NGO Corpo Movimento is a not-for-profit organisation with a social, philanthropic, educational and sportive character. It was founded in 1998 by a group of capoeira teachers and students from the Association Capoeira Liberdade who were already teaching the art of capoeira in the communities of Cantagalo and Pavão-Pavãozinho.
The project came into being in the old Panorama Palace Hotel that housed the academy Lagoa Sport in the 80's. The academy organized a summer camp with various cultural and sportive activities and Capoeira was one of them.
When the academy was closed, José Roberto Banõs, Physical Education teacher at the university UFRJ and Capoeira practitioner, continued to give capoeira classes in the location and developed a project of social inclusion, integrating children and adolescents from areas of risk and exclusion from other social classes.
The NGO Corpo Movimento is based on the ethical and social fundamentals of the capoeira philosophy, trying to preserve the historic heritage of black culture found in the Favelas of the city Rio de Janeiro .
The temporary address of the NGO Corpo Movimento is: Rua Alberto de Campos, nº12/1ºandar, Ipanema, CEP: 22.471-020, Rio de Janeiro. On a daily basis, we develop workshops in Capoeira, Maculelê, Afro Dance, percussion, folklore, arts and crafts, environmental education, English, and citizenship.
